PART ONE - Discover Yourself

Question: Can I just skip to building my portfolio?
Answer: Think of SBA like a tree. Some trees have very shallow roots and some have very deep roots. The trees that don’t have deep roots, can easily be blown over, or succumb to a shift in the soil. However, trees that have gone deep to grow roots that are just as deep as they are high, can withstand almost anything: storm, wind, or a shift in the soil.
Your personal strengths, passions, and future path are much like those roots of the tree. If we spend a little time working to understand and define what you stand for, your future will be more rooted and will be stronger as you plan for your future.
In addition, the more you take the time to discover your skills and path, the more you will be able to recognize and attract future opportunities. Future college admissions or employers will want to know about your current projects, paths and strengths.
Working through the SBA lessons will prepare you to answer those questions when you are asked!
1.1 - Discover your strengths

In Lesson 1.1, Josh shows you how to discover your strengths. You’ll take a personality quiz to determine your personality type, as well as determine the strengths that people with the same personality type have. You will also be informed about potential weaknesses of your personality type, and how to overcome them and even use them to your advantage. Finally, you’ll see what interests and passions may correlate with your personality type.

1.2 - Discover your passions

In Lesson 1.2, Josh asks you to think about your passions and what you like to do. After a few questions to get you to think about what you’re enthusiastic about, Josh asks you about your skills, and how they may correlate with your passions. Finally, Josh asks you what led you to your interests, and informs you about turning your passions into skills.

1.3 - Discover a dream job/career

In Lesson 1.3, Josh asks you to think about your future. You’ll begin identifying the direction you want to go, then create a road map to get there. You begin narrowing down your careers, including what you’re good at and what you don’t want to go into. You’ll also get a guide to potential careers and future jobs. Finally, you’ll think about what’s next, including what opportunities are available and what may prepare you for your future life.

1.4 - Learn from experts in a field you like

In Lesson 1.4, you will look at experts in your chosen fields. You’ll see how these experts shine online within their fields. You’ll also be looking at their online presence and gleaning information and tips from your chosen experts. You’ll also note other information about your experts, such as social media presence, public perception and content shared.

1.5 -Discover how your strengths, passion and path fit together!

In Lesson 1.5, you’ll round out the first part of your SBA journey. You will use your past worksheets to see how your skills, passions and paths fit together. Finally, you’ll reflect on your journey and look towards your next steps in SBA.
Part 1 Conclusion
You have now completed Part 1 of the Student Branding Academy. This has been primarily a discovery journey for you about your own passions, strengths, and where all of that might lead you.
Looking at the examples of people who are already successful in the career you are interested in was hopefully a great start to seeing how people who don’t know you make conclusions or create ideas about you just because of what they see about you in a Google or social media search.
In Part 2 we are going to focus on creating that positive social media presence for you so you shine online.
