As a parent, you might wonder what these chatbots are, how they work, and what potential benefits and risks they pose for your child. It’s important to understand the distinctions among these different apps and ways of using them, which range from harmless, fun, and even educational to some that are completely inappropriate for kids.

What are AI Chatbots?
- AI chatbots are software programs designed to simulate human conversation, allowing users to interact with them through text or voice in a way that feels like talking to a real person
- Powered by artificial intelligence, these chatbots can understand and respond to a wide range of questions or prompts, often using natural language processing (NLP) to generate human-like responses
- Teens might use AI chatbots for a variety of purposes, including seeking advice, getting help with schoolwork, or just for entertainment. However, there are many chatbots that easily veer into X-rated content
- “Some users like to use [chatbots] to create interactive stories or engage in role-plays they would otherwise be embarrassed to explore with their friends.” (Source: The Verge)
- Teens going through a difficult emotional time may be especially vulnerable to withdrawing from real family and friends and susceptible to dangerous content or suggestions

Examples of chatbot dangers in the news
The suit argues that the concerning interactions experienced by the plaintiffs' children were not "hallucinations," a term researchers use to refer to an AI chatbot's tendency to make things up. This was ongoing manipulation and abuse, active isolation and encouragement designed to and that did incite anger and violence. - NPR
For some users, A.I. companions may actually worsen isolation, by replacing human relationships with artificial ones. Struggling teens could use them in place of therapy or asking a parent or trusted adult for support. And when users are experiencing a mental health crisis, their A.I. companions may not be able to get them the help they need. - New York Times
Why do students want to use AI chatbots?
- AI chatbots remember personal details and past conversations that make users feel like they are talking to a friend
- Chatbots adapt their personality to match user preferences
- They can role-play as friends, mentors, therapists, or romantic partners
- Chatbots mimic human emotions, "show" empathy, ask follow-up questions, and offer guidance

- They can function as a tutor for schoolwork and help you excel in a language, subject, or any field
- Users can play fun games, quizzes, ask for movie/TV recommendations, and get personalized music playlists
Why should parents & educators care?
- AI chatbots can act empathetic and seem highly realistic, but in reality they are a form of technology that does not actually understand
- They do not always adhere to privacy agreements. They also use your conversations to help shape their AI, so your information is not always confidential
- AI companions can help people feel less isolated, but it may displace human connections, making one feel more isolated
- Users may develop unhealthy emotional dependencies, neglecting real-world relationships or losing the ability to navigate human interactions
What can parents & educators do?
- Dialogue with your teen about the benefits and downfalls of AI chatbots and decide together what is appropriate for them to use
- Be educated on the AI chatbots available and the ones your students are using
- Create a Social Media Agreement with your teen to set screen time boundaries
- Ensure your teen has a trusted adult they can go to if they ever feel uncomfortable online
