Instagram quietly rolled out a new feature that could put your child’s privacy at risk. The platform’s Instagram Map, modeled after Snapchat’s Snap Map, lets users share their real-time location with friends and followers. While the feature is turned off by default, teens can opt in with just a few taps, potentially revealing sensitive information like where they live, go to school, or spend time with friends. As a parent, understanding how this tool works, and how it might expose your teen to strangers, is an important step in keeping their online experience safe.

Instagram's Map Feature Explained (Parent video)

What is Instagram Map?

  • Instagram Map is an interactive feature designed to allow users to share their real-time location with their friends
  • This feature is off by default, meaning that teens must actively choose to opt-in before any location data is shared
    • Even when the app is updated, the feature remains inactive unless deliberately turned on by the user
  • Instagram Map resembles Snapchat's Snap Map and aims to enhance social interaction by enabling users to see what their friends are doihng and explore their surroundings
  • The map feature is accessible through the user's Instagram direct messages
  • Once enabled, the map makes the user's current location visible to a selected audience. Users have control over who can see their locations, choosing among all followers they follow back, "Close Friends," or specific individuals

Why Location Sharing is a Concern

  • The main risk associated with location sharing is the possibility of teens inadvertently sharing their whereabouts with people they don't know, including the location of their school or home
  • It's important to remember that many teens use social media to connect with friends online who they might not know personally
  • Additionally, if a teen falsifies their age when signing up, they might not receive the full spectrum of Instagram's teen protections, increasing their exposure to potential risks

What can parents do?

  • If you aren't already utilizing Instagram's Parental Supervision, set that up to manage your teen's use of this feature
  • Teens cannot activate the map feature without parental consent if you've enabled supervision, and you will receive a notification if they attempt to do so
  • Utilize parental controls on both iPhones and Android devices to limit which apps can access your child's location
  • Prevent new apps from sharing location data without your permission
  • Discuss the potential risks of location sharing with your child

Conclusion

Instagram Map may seem like a fun way for teens to connect with friends, but it comes with real risks if not managed carefully. By talking openly with your child, setting up parental supervision, and adjusting device settings, you can reduce the chances of location data being shared with strangers. Most importantly, use this as an opportunity to remind your teen that privacy online is just as important as safety in the real world.

Josh's presentation about social media was unbelievably fantastic. Our students learned so much about what kids should and shouldn't be doing. The fact that it is such a thoughtful process made it all worthwhile.
