Santa Rosa County Protects 19,000 Florida Students With SmartSocial's Online Safety Program

Santa Rosa County School District in Milton, Florida is taking a proactive stance on student online safety — and it’s getting noticed. The district, which serves more than 19,000 students in the Florida Panhandle, partnered with SmartSocial to provide parents with real-world guidance on navigating social media, screen time, and digital dangers.
The district’s partnership was featured in local news coverage highlighting how Santa Rosa is equipping families with the resources they need — before a problem starts.
The danger isn’t at the front door — it’s in the corner of the room.
SmartSocial founder Josh Ochs gave Santa Rosa County parents a reality check that stuck: ‘You may think your kids are safe in the corner of the house with headphones on, but they’re actually a million miles away chatting with people who are teaching them things that you don’t want them to learn.’ The FBI reports more than 500,000 online predators active every single day — and they’re sophisticated. ‘Strangers online are very good at manipulating kids in some ways,’ Ochs said. ‘And making the kids feel very comfortable to give them information.’ Santa Rosa County’s partnership with SmartSocial is a direct response to this reality: parents need more than warnings. They need a plan.

This isn’t a distant threat. The Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office received more than 250 online tips since January 1 alone — with more than 400 reported in the past year. The top report categories: child sexual abuse material and online enticement. Snapchat, Instagram, and Discord were identified as the platforms where these interactions most frequently occur. ‘If we can prevent people, prevent the kids, from posting online or having parents check your kids’ devices, we might be able to help,’ said Detective Ashley Thompson of the Santa Rosa County Sheriff’s Office. SmartSocial’s free, live online sessions give parents exactly the knowledge they need to check, protect, and guide their children on these platforms.
One Santa Rosa mom learned that the most important safety tool is an open conversation.
For Melissa Atha, a Santa Rosa County parent who attended multiple SmartSocial sessions, the biggest shift wasn’t a parental control setting or a new app — it was realizing that communication is the foundation of everything. ‘We can talk about tricky people in the real world,’ she said, ‘but what we didn’t think about was tricky people hiding online.’ Attending SmartSocial sessions with her son changed that. ‘I convinced him that this was something that was really important,’ she said. ‘That communication pathway between the two of us is so important.’ That is the outcome SmartSocial is designed to create in every Santa Rosa County family: not fear, but connection — parents and kids navigating the digital world together.
