What Parents Need to Know Before Teens Face Pressure Online

  • Teens may not understand how quickly “private” images can leave their control. A message that feels temporary can still be saved, recorded, or shared
  • Pressure can happen inside relationships teens trust. Requests for explicit images may come from someone a teen likes, trusts, or wants to stay connected with
  • Disappearing messages can create a false sense of safety. Teens may believe an image is gone forever, even when someone can capture it another way
  • Sexting can lead to emotional, social, school, and legal consequences. The risks can extend far beyond the original conversation
  • Parents can help teens make safer decisions before a crisis happens. Calm, specific conversations at home can give teens a plan for what to do next

How Explicit Images Between Teens Can Lead to Shame & Serious Consequences

Why Parents Should Address Sexting Before a Teen Feels Pressure

  • Many teen relationships and friendships now happen through texts, direct messages, group chats, disappearing messages, and secondary apps
  • A request for an explicit image can happen quickly, especially when emotions are high or a teen feels close to someone
  • A JAMA Pediatrics review found that about one in seven teens have sent a sexually explicit message, image, or video, and more than one in four have received one. (Source: Jama Network) And a more recent study suggests that about one-third of teens have either sent or received an explicit photo (Source: Science Direct)

Why Teens May Send Explicit Images

  • Teens may send an explicit image because they believe the moment is private and especially when the request comes from someone they trust or care about
  • Disappearing messages can make the choice feel lower-risk, even though the image can still be captured or shared another way
  • A teen may feel pressured into sending an image, worrying that saying no will hurt the relationship, create conflict, or make the other person pull away
  • In the moment, many teens may not think through how quickly one image can move beyond the original conversation or be used later in ways they never expected

When an Image Leaves a Teen’s Control

  • Once an explicit image is sent, the sender cannot fully control what happens next. The image may be saved, recorded, shown to someone else, or shared in a group chat, even if the teen believed the message would stay private
  • The image can also resurface later, even when sent to someone in a close relationship, including during an argument, after a breakup, or when someone wants to pressure the sender into sending more
  • When an image spreads beyond the original intent, a teen may feel trapped, embarrassed, scared, or unsure who to tell
  • These situations can create anxiety, shame, isolation, and fear and they may be afraid to go to school or face classmates and worry that parents, teachers, friends, or future schools will find out

The Legal and School Consequences of Sexting

    • Sharing or forwarding an explicit image of someone under 18 can lead to school discipline or law enforcement involvement, even when the person sharing it is also a minor.
    • Because laws vary by state, teens should understand that receiving an image does not make it okay to save, show, forward, or respond to it
    • If an explicit image appears in a message or group chat, the safest step is always to stop and tell a parent, school staff member, or another trusted adult right away
  • What Parents Can Do to Help Protect Their Teens

    • Start the conversation before your teen is facing pressure. Let them know they can come to you about anything, even if the situation feels embarassing, scary or involves a mistake
    • Explain that a private message is not always private and a disappearing image is not always gone forever. Any image can be saved, recorded, shared, or brought up later
    • Help your teen recognize when they are feeling pressure to send an explicit image. Someone who cares about them should not push them to send explicit photos, threaten to share an image, or make them feel like saying no will ruin the relationship
    • Have your teen ask themselves, "Would I be okay if my family or teacher saw this photo tomorrow?"
    • Talk through real life situatiohns they may face and discuss the legal, social and emotional consequences of sharing photos
    • Set a family rule to not send or forward any explicit images and consider creating a Family Media Agreement with your child to set clear boundaries and have important conversations surrounding tech use

    Conclusion

Talking about explicit images with your teen may feel uncomfortable, but avoiding the conversation can leave them unprepared when pressure shows up in a private message, a relationship, or a group chat. Parents do not need to have the perfect words. What matters most is creating a calm, clear path for teens to ask for help, understand the consequences, and know what to do before a situation escalates. When teens know they will be met with support instead of shame, they are more likely to come forward quickly and make safer decisions online.
